Crunchy texture on the outside and juicy on the inside, Oatmeal Prawns is a great item to impress your guests! I discovered this scrumptious dish in Singapore, it is one of their favorite food. It is really easy to make, except for the deep-frying part. I’m not a big fan of deep frying. But the taste makes up for it!
So I decided to give this dish a try since we have a big container of instant oatmeal which has been sitting on our shelf for a while now.
Recipe
This recipe is based on Cereal Prawn Recipe by my wok life. I tweaked it a bit and ere’s my version.
Ingredients
- 500 grams of medium to large prawns.
- 4 cloves of garlic minced
- 1 tablespoon of curry – it adds a great flavour to it!
- 2 tablespoon of butter
- 5 tablespoon of instant oatmeal
- Sesame oil, pepper, soya sauce for seasoning
- A pinch of salt
- ½ Litre oil for deep frying
Method:
- Use a pair of scissors to cut a slit along the back of the prawn’s shell to de vein it.
- Season the prawns with oil, pepper and soya sauce. Let it rest for a while. Meanwhile heat the oil and on a plate mix oatmeal, salt, pepper and curry.
- Deep fry the prawns. Remove them once they turn pink on all sides.
- Stir fry the garlic in butter and a few tablespoon of the oil used for deep frying.
- Add in the cereal & prawns.
- Stir fry on hight heat until the prawns are well coated with the oatmeal.
Serving Suggestions:
Eat it hot with steamed white rice and a vegetable side dish.

Having been “force” fed oatmeal at least 3x per week for breakfast as a child, I promised never to eat it again. Your recipe has altered my conscious and has led me to use oatmeal for something that looks quite tasty and not just filling.
Thanks for sharing the recipe.
Great blog.
